Russia - Chernyshenko: Digital passports to be tested in Moscow, Moscow region and Tatarstan

Russia (bbabo.net) - The Russian government has selected three pilot regions for the implementation of a digital passport. Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko told RIA Novosti about this, noting that the system design of the passport is already ready, technical tests of the basic electronic components have been carried out.

According to him, the issuance of digital passports will begin in early 2023, tentatively, in regions with a high technological readiness to use such documents - these are Moscow, the Moscow region and the Republic of Tatarstan. It will be possible to use a digital passport anywhere in Russia. The Deputy Prime Minister stressed that replacing a paper passport with a smart card will be the choice of every citizen.

Chernyshenko recalled that a digital passport is an analogue of an electronic bank card with a contactless chip, containing several degrees of protection against counterfeiting. The personal data of the person and his photograph will be marked on the card. If you wish, you can add, for example, a driver's license number, TIN or SNILS.

Earlier, the head of the Main Directorate for Migration Issues of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, Valentina Kazakova, announced that the issuance of electronic passports in Russia is planned from January 2023. At the initial stage, it is planned to issue at least 100 thousand of such passports. Citizens will be able to receive them on a voluntary basis, starting at the age of 14. Kazakova noted that from a legal point of view, a passport with an electronic carrier of information will have the same status as a valid paper passport.
