Russia - Doctors: Back pain may indicate cancer

Russia (bbabo.net), - Vertebral pain syndrome, in other words, back pain, can be of a dangerous nature and indicate the presence of metastases in the spine. In such cases, the patient may require an urgent operation, but practice shows that people often delay contacting medical institutions, and the doctors themselves are not always ready to promptly organize a surgical intervention.

These conclusions were reached by doctors from the Janelidze Research Institute of Emergency Medicine and the Pavlov First St. Petersburg State Medical University as part of a large-scale study of routing patients with vertebral pain syndrome. The results of the joint work were published in the journal Traumatology and Orthopedics in Russia.

The publication notes that metastatic lesions of the spine are best susceptible to surgical intervention within three days from the moment of acute disorders. But, as shown by a study conducted in hospitals in St. Petersburg, out of 43 patients whose fate was monitored by doctors as part of the study, only ten were hospitalized in the first week since the onset of vertebral syndrome. Moreover, only six of them were hospitalized in the first 72 hours.

The authors of the study explain this circumstance by two factors. First, the patients themselves, when they have vertebral syndrome, endure pain for some time and do not go to doctors. Secondly, not all doctors are ready to immediately refer patients with back pain to specialized centers and initially offer conservative treatment methods.

The publication notes that when a patient suffers pain for a long time, it affects the state of health, worsens the quality of life of a person and can affect the outcome of treatment. How exactly is a difficult question, this problem, as it turned out, had not been particularly studied before. The problem of long prehospital pauses is not unique to Russia. There are similar difficulties in treating patients in the Netherlands and Canada.

The key problem is that almost anyone can "grab their backs". And only in isolated cases a person needs an operation, but if it is not done, the outcome can be sad. The authors of the study say that in the risk group here, first of all, patients with previously diagnosed oncological diseases, as well as people who have been diagnosed with the immunodeficiency virus, are. For back pain, they should immediately consult a doctor, even if the alarm turns out to be false, in their case it is better to play it safe.
