Japan sets world record for healthy longevity

Japan has set a world record for so-called "healthy longevity" - the age up to which an elderly person can do without assistance and do not need care. This was announced by the country's Ministry of Labor, Health and Welfare.

According to the authorities, the age of healthy longevity in Japan - for both men and women - has become the highest in the world. For women it is 75.5 years, for men 72.6, RIA Novosti reports. In comparison with 2001, the age of "healthy longevity" increased by 2.73 years for women and 3.28 years for men.

The ministry also noted that Japan has the highest life expectancy among the G7 countries - 81.41 years for men and 87.45 years for women.

Earlier, Japanese scientists published in the journal Nature Aging a paper describing a vaccine to destroy the so-called "zombie cells" that damage neighboring cells. These cells are believed to be responsible for age-related diseases. The vaccine has been proven effective in mice. Their lifespan increased, the degree of atherosclerosis decreased, and their metabolism improved.
