New type of coronavirus strain detected for the first time in Belarus

The first confirmed cases of infection with a new variant of the coronavirus - omicron - were recorded on December 29 in Belarus. Four people in the republic have confirmed the presence of this dangerous virus, BelTA learned from the press service of the Ministry of Health. True, all patients have a mild course of the disease.

During the day, the department specified, 1,493 patients with COVID-19 were registered in the Republic of Belarus, 1,699 were discharged. And in total, since the beginning of the pandemic, 696,220 people have been registered in the republic with a positive test for coronavirus infection. During this time, 688 890 patients recovered.

The ministry said that since Tuesday, 27,593 tests have already been completed, and a total of 10,999,160 tests have been carried out in the country.

By the way, literally the day before, at an informal summit of CIS heads of state in St. Petersburg, answering a question from Alexander Lukashenko, Russia's chief state sanitary doctor Anna Popova said that Russian specialists had already visited South Africa, where they studied the omicron strain. It turned out, for example, that in this country the virus does not cause a severe course of the disease, except for those patients who are not vaccinated or have concomitant diseases. However, she added, perhaps these data were obtained due to the fact that the average age of the inhabitants of an African country does not exceed thirty years, and young people are easier to tolerate the disease.

Not entirely indicative, she said, and the situation with the "omicron" in the UK, where the overall level of immunization exceeds 80 percent. In a word, “no serious epidemiological observations have yet been published. But the fact that the omicron strain is much more infectious is very important. for whom getting sick with any variant of this virus is a high risk, "the Russian specialist emphasized, adding that this could overload the entire healthcare system.
