In response to Western sanctions, the Belarusian authorities have been imposing a food embargo on a number of goods from states that are unfriendly towards the country since the first day of the New Year. In reporting this, BelTA refers to the government decree of December 6 of the past year.

The ban, the agency specifies, applies to a number of goods from the European Union, the United States and Canada, Albania and Norway, Iceland, North Macedonia, the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland, Montenegro and Switzerland.

As for the list of prohibited goods, their list includes the meat of pigs and cattle, a number of by-products, food flour made from meat or meat by-products. The list of goods that fell under the embargo also included milk and dairy products, vegetables, except for those intended for sowing, fruits and nuts, animal fats, sausages, confectionery, salt and a number of other goods.

The press service of the Cabinet of Ministers stressed that "the most important priority for the country remains the interests of its citizens. The head of state has repeatedly focused on taking response measures without harming the population. For this reason, the resolution of the Council of Ministers contains a number of exceptions, and, in particular, it will not affect goods imported by Belarusians for personal consumption, as well as, for example, intended for baby food, and a number of other items of critical import. "

Simultaneously with the announcement of the food embargo, the agency explains, measures will be taken to ensure a balance in the consumer market, including by saturating it with domestically produced products. Importers, manufacturers and trade networks will be focused on replacing goods that are not produced in the Republic of Belarus with supplies from friendly states.

In addition, a regulation on quotas for the import of certain types of goods into the territory of Belarus was approved.
