In preparation for the 1100th anniversary of the adoption of Islam, the Fair Mosque will be recreated in Nizhny Novgorod

Russia and the CIS (bbabo.net) - The federal plan of events for the celebration of the 1100th anniversary of the adoption of Islam by the Volga Bulgaria, which was signed by the head of the official organizing committee, Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Marat Khusnullin, lists 71 events.

The full list of events has not been officially published, however, as it became known to IA bbabo.net, the plan includes such items as the restoration of the historical appearance of the complex of buildings of a Muslim mosque and madrasah on the street. Bolshaya Tatarskaya in Moscow and the solemn ceremony of the beginning of the construction of the Fair Mosque in Nizhny Novgorod.

In addition, in preparation for the holiday, a center for the digitization of Islamic manuscripts will be opened in Kazan, a feature film about Ibn Fadlan, the opening of a new complex of the Russian Islamic University in Ufa, the publication of the photo album "Mosques of Russia" and the encyclopedia "Islam in the Russian Federation" as well as various conferences and forums, including in the Caucasus.

From the very beginning, Islamic civilization was associated with trade routes and urban economic centers - fairs. The Great Volga Way was the way of promoting Islam to the North. In Itil, Bulgar, Sarai and Kazan, the fair has always coexisted with the mosque. The question of building a fair mosque arose immediately, as soon as the Nizhny Novgorod fair started working in 1817. The need for a mosque was obvious - Muslim merchants from different countries came to trade. The mosque, located on Mohammedan Square, was a communication center for Muslim merchants selling at the fair. Arriving at the auction, some merchants stayed in Nizhny Novgorod and became Nizhny Novgorod residents in the full sense of the word.

In the era of the Fair Mosque, which spanned a whole century (1820-1920s), the modern appearance of Nizhny Novgorod as the largest economic and administrative center of Russia was largely formed.

In spring, during floods, the building of the mosque found itself on the banks of a water-filled canal fed by the waters of the flooded Oka River, recalling pictures of Venetian life. It is no coincidence that the trans-river part of Nizhny Novgorod was called the Venice of Nizhny Novgorod. Traders could come to the mosque by crossing the canal along the Tatarsky bridge or from the side of Orenburgskaya street, Karavannaya, or Meshchersky and Asian lanes.
