Russia - Scientists: The central part of Kamchatka was the bottom of a giant lake

Russia (bbabo.net) - According to research by scientists, thousands of years ago the central part of the Kamchatka Peninsula was the bottom of a giant lake, the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences reports.

"A group of scientists led by the leading researcher of the IVS FEB RAS, Doctor of Geographical Sciences Vera Ponomareva in 2021 reconstructed the continuous chronicle of volcanic eruptions in Kamchatka during the late Pleistocene - 12-30 thousand years ago. Research for the first time made it possible to assume a long - more than 20 thousand years - the existence of a huge lake dammed by glaciers in the central part of Kamchatka. Its area, according to the most conservative estimates, exceeded 10 thousand square kilometers, "explained Alexey Ozerov, director of the IVS FEB RAS.

In addition, the research results show that the strongest explosive eruptions, that is, explosive eruptions, occurred in Kamchatka 30-25 thousand years ago. The largest happened about 28 thousand years ago on the Gorely volcano. Particles of magmatic material, then thrown out by the giant, were found in the territory from the central part of Kamchatka to Chukotka.

Gorely still belongs to active volcanoes; its last eruption took place in 2010-2014.
