The State Duma proposed to leave the CSTO contingent in Kazakhstan forever

Deputy Sergei Mironov, co-chairman of the Fair Russia - For Truth party, proposed leaving the CSTO peacekeeping contingent in Kazakhstan on a permanent basis, Interfax reports.

“The CSTO forces can become the basis for the formation in Kazakhstan of a system of countering extremism, including for the protection of the Russian-speaking population. I propose to consider the issue of the presence of the CSTO military in the republic on a permanent basis. This will bring peace and tranquility for years to come, ”Mironov said.

Earlier, the European Union "took note" of Kazakhstan's appeal to the CSTO for help.

On January 5, amid the pogroms in Kazakhstan, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev appealed to the heads of the CSTO states with a request to help Kazakhstan overcome "this terrorist threat."

In Kazakhstan, protests began on January 2 in the city of Zhanaozen, Mangistau Oblast, due to an increase in the price per liter of liquefied gas to 120 tenge (about 21 rubles). Previously, the price for a liter of gas was 60 tenge. Two days later, clashes between protesters and the police and the military began in Almaty and a number of other cities.
