CSTO Secretary General: about 2.5 thousand peacekeepers will be in Kazakhstan

The collective peacekeeping forces of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in Kazakhstan will number about 2.5 thousand people, and, if necessary, can be strengthened. Secretary General of the organization Stanislav Zas told RIA Novosti.

“The total number of the grouping of the collective peacekeeping forces may be different. Now, in accordance with the decisions that have been made - about 2,500 people. We have the entire list of units, formations that make up the CSTO peacekeeping forces - about 3,600. Therefore, if necessary, we will strengthen the grouping in Kazakhstan, ”Zas clarified, adding that the peacekeepers“ will proceed from the situation ”in the country.

He noted that the geography of deployment will depend "on those decisions that will be made on the spot by the commander of this peacekeeping contingent in cooperation with the forces of law and order and the Ministry of Defense of Kazakhstan." “Where exactly is the efforts of our peacekeeping units needed,” Zas explained.

According to him, peacekeepers in Kazakhstan will protect important state and strategic facilities, as well as provide assistance in maintaining law and order.

Earlier, CSTO spokesman Vladimir Zainetdinov said that at the first stage, the number of the Collective Peacekeeping Forces (CMF) will not be disclosed to any of the countries. He explained that it will be determined by "operational necessity and the nature of the tasks performed."
