The White House doubts the legality of sending CSTO peacekeepers to Kazakhstan

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said during a briefing that the United States is not yet aware of the legality of sending CSTO peacekeepers to Kazakhstan, TASS reported.

“We are closely monitoring reports that the CSTO has sent its Collective Peacekeeping Forces to Kazakhstan. We have questions about the nature of this request, whether it was a legitimate invitation or not. At the moment we do not know this, ”said Psaki,

She called on the CSTO and Kazakhstani law enforcement agencies to comply with international human rights obligations in the country and stressed that the decision of the CSTO Council would not affect the upcoming talks between Russia and the United States on security issues.

Earlier, CSTO Secretary General Stanislav Zas said that the duration of the presence of peacekeeping forces in Kazakhstan will depend on the situation in the country and the decision of President Tokayev.

The first division of Russian peacekeepers is already in Kazakhstan. The military contingent of Belarus was also sent there.

The Commander of the Collective Peacekeeping Forces, who will be in charge of the overall leadership of the contingent, has already taken up his duties. However, his name will be announced later.
