WHO reports record number of new COVID-19 cases per day

More than 2.6 million people infected with coronavirus have been registered in the world in the last 24 hours. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), this is the highest daily rate for the entire COVID-19 pandemic.

The previous anti-record was set on January 5: during the day, the WHO received reports of 2.2 million infected, reports TASS. It is also noted that over the past 24 hours, 8.1 thousand people have died in the world.

In total, according to the WHO as of January 6, 296,496,809 people fell ill with COVID-19 and 5,462,631 died. It is emphasized that WHO statistics take into account only officially confirmed information on those infected and the deaths provided by states.

The organization notes that most of the confirmed cases of coronavirus infection were registered in the United States - 56.8 million. This is followed by India (35.1 million), Brazil (22.3 million), the United Kingdom (13.8 million) and France (10.6 million). The most fatalities are in the USA - 824,175, followed by Brazil (619,384), and the third - by India (482,876).
