Tokayev declared January 10 the Day of National Mourning in Kazakhstan

President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev declared January 10 a day of national mourning.

"In connection with the numerous human casualties as a result of tragic events in a number of regions of the country, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev decided to declare January 10, 2022 a day of national mourning," wrote press secretary Berik Uali.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Kazakhstan, as a result of the protests, 18 employees of the security agencies were killed. In total, about a thousand people were injured.

Massive protests began in the early days of 2022. Residents of a number of regions opposed a two-fold increase in prices for liquefied motor gas.

Then the performances spread to other cities, including Alma-Ata. Population discontent was exploited by illegal armed groups. They attacked state institutions, took weapons from the security forces. In response, the authorities declared a state of emergency across the country until January 19 and launched a counter-terrorism operation.

On the morning of January 5, President Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev dismissed the government and headed the Security Council of Kazakhstan. At the first meeting of the Security Council, Tokayev described the situation in Kazakhstan as undermining the integrity of the state and a terrorist attack, RIA Novosti informs.
