We are not invaders, we were invited by brothers. How is the CSTO operation in Kazakhstan going?

A video conference of the leaders of the CSTO member states took place on Monday. The heads of state summed up the interim results of the peacekeeping mission in Kazakhstan, and also discussed the timing of its completion and the withdrawal of troops from the republic.

"Chaos Zones"

"Full order has been restored in Kazakhstan, dangerous threats to the country's security have been prevented, as part of the anti-terrorist operation, work is underway to identify persons who participated in the crimes," said Kazakh President Kassym- Zhomart Tokayev.

He specified that the CSTO peacekeeping mission in the republic will end together with the anti-terrorist operation. The leader of the country noted that the goal of the terrorists was a coup d'etat. The attackers used their own communications and changed into military uniforms. Then “what will probably go down in history as the Alma-Ata tragedy began”.

“There is a plan to form a zone of chaos on our territory with the subsequent seizure of power. In accordance with the decision of the Security Council of Kazakhstan, based on a comprehensive analysis of law enforcement agencies and special services, the situation was qualified as a threat of terrorism and an act of aggression. Events in Kazakhstan have become critical, ”Tokayev said.

He added that all the demands of peaceful protesters were heard and fulfilled by the state. But for the organizers of the aggression against Kazakhstan, this did not matter. The militants abandoned their plans after learning of the arrival of the CSTO. There are 2,300 peacekeepers in the country now. Their mission showed the relevance and effectiveness of the CSTO, the head of Kazakhstan believes.

“They did not take us by surprise”

In turn, the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin said that what happened in Kazakhstan was not the first and not the last attempt at outside interference.

“The measures taken by the CSTO have clearly shown that we will not allow the situation to be rocked at home and will not allow the scenario of the so-called color revolutions to be realized,” the Russian leader emphasized.

In his opinion, one should "think about improving the decision-making procedures for the use of joint forces (the CSTO member states -)". He believes that decisions should be made not only promptly, but also uniformly.

“The main thing is that the tragic events that our brotherly country Kazakhstan is experiencing today does not take us by surprise in the future, so that we are fully mobilized and ready to repulse any provocations,” the President of the Russian Federation summed up.

He also assured that after fulfilling their functions, the entire contingent will be withdrawn from the territory of Kazakhstan.

“Our brother invited us”

“The peacekeeping contingent should not be allowed to be presented as occupiers. We see such attempts are already being made. We are not occupiers, we did not come there of our own free will. We were invited by our brother, our friend, who is responsible for this huge country, ”stressed President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko.

He noted that the CSTO member states should respond to the requests of the President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon, who called on to support his state with military equipment. “I would not like the situation (similar to the riots in Kazakhstan) to repeat itself in Tajikistan,” the Belarusian leader explained.

He is also confident that other countries should also learn from the protests in Kazakhstan, since, according to the information of the Belarusians, the terrorists' "views" are "thrown, including at Uzbekistan."

Unified list of terrorists

President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon proposed to form a unified list of terrorist organizations recognized as banned by the CSTO.

And the head of the Cabinet of Ministers of Kyrgyzstan Akylbek Zhaparov warned of the risk of movement of terrorists who took part in the riots in Kazakhstan across the borders - within the CSTO countries.

“According to the information received, a large number of firearms fell into the hands of criminal circles,” the prime minister said.

According to him, in this regard, the CSTO member states are obliged "to make joint efforts to restore stability in Kazakhstan and prevent attacks on military, administrative and social facilities of the country."

In turn, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan called for strengthening the CSTO crisis response mechanisms. In his opinion, this, "undoubtedly, would serve" both the further development of interaction between the member states and the strengthening of the relevant structures and mechanisms of the organization. "

In early 2022, protests began in Kazakhstan over the rise in gas prices. Despite the fact that the authorities made concessions, riots spread throughout the republic. Protesters burned cars, administration buildings, attacked law enforcement officials and looted. On January 5, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev called on the CSTO member states to send peacekeepers. At the same time, he said that "international gangs" who had received serious training abroad were participating in the riots.
