Eurodeputy who observed pseudo-referendum in Crimea was stripped of immunity

On Wednesday, 14 October, the European Parliament stripped Bela Kovacs of immunity. He represents the Hungarian far-right party "Jobbik".

This was written Deutsche Welle.

55-year-old politician is suspected of espionage against the EU institutions for the benefit of Russia.

Accusations against Kovacs appeared in the pro-government newspaper in May 2014, shortly before the elections to the European Parliament.

Hungary Prosecutor's Office said that a politician is in contact with representatives of the Russian special services since 2010. Kovacs frequently visits Moscow and was an observer at the so-called referendum in the annexed Crimea.

The politician has denied the accusations.

Decision of the European Parliament makes it possible to conduct a formal investigation against Kovac. If his guilt is proved, he will sit from two to eight years in prison.
