Olympiad in questions and answers

If you ask what is the most important month of the year for the Chinese, then without exaggeration we can say that this is the first month of the lunar calendar or for the uninitiated in the wisdom of the Chinese calendar system - February.

But February 2022 promises to be even more long-awaited and special, not only for China, but for the whole world. Beijing will host the 24th Winter Olympic Games from February 4 to 20, and the Paralympic Winter Games from March 4 to 13. This is a unique event that China can rightly be proud of. Beijing will be the first city in world history to have the honor of hosting both the 2008 Summer and the upcoming Winter Olympic Games.

Students of the University of Communications and Communications of China organized a quiz-poll "Olympiad in Questions and Answers". The survey involved university students who shared their thoughts on the symbolism of the upcoming sporting event.

Beijing will soon host the Winter Olympic Games. What can you say about the Olympic emblem?

Xiao Zhihan, 3rd year student:

This logo is similar to the hieroglyph "winter". Its upper part resembles the figure of a skater, and the lower part resembles the image of a skier. In general, the entire logo is a dancing figure. In addition, the ornament in the form of ribbons symbolizes the mountain ranges of China, Olympic venues, ski slopes and skating rinks. You know, in this logo even the color is symbolic. The blue represents the dream, the future and the purity of the snow, while the red and yellow are the colors of the national flag of China, which symbolize enthusiasm, youth and vitality. Therefore, I believe that the Olympic logo fits well with the traditional and modern culture of China.

Bing-dundun is the mascot of the Winter Olympics, and Xue-rongrong is the mascot of the Paralympics. What do their names mean? What is their image associated with?

Gan Yuwen, 3rd year student:

The name "Bing-dundun" is very symbolic: "bin" means ice, it symbolizes purity and strength, and "dundun" is health, good looks and cheerfulness. Usually Chinese parents say this to their children when they wish them to be healthy and strong. "Xue-zhongrong" - "xue" - this is snow, cleanliness, speaks of the aesthetics of snow sports. The first "jun" in the name means patience, and the second - unity. The name "Rongrong" expresses China's dream of creating a harmonious and tolerant community of common destiny.

Bing-dundun - a panda in an ice jacket, on the panda's head a hat resembling a spacesuit. And above the head - a colored halo, which symbolizes the State Skating Stadium - "Ice Ribbon". The multi-colored stripes are the 5G communication format, and the heart on the left paw is the hospitality of China. Xue Rongzhong is a living Chinese lantern. Lanterns in China symbolize light, celebration and warmth. At the top of the lantern is a dove of peace and the outlines of the Temple of Heaven. The snowball symbolizes the traditional proverb, which is also in Russia - "a lot of snow - a lot of bread."

The Olympic talismans Bing-dundun and Xue-zhongrong express the traditional values of Chinese culture: harmony, friendship between peoples, the spirit of overcoming difficulties. At the same time, New Year's features are present in the symbolism of the talismans.

What does the design of the 2022 Winter Olympics medals express?

Wang Yinan, 4th year student:

The design of the Olympic medals has elements of Chinese culture. First of all, five rings are depicted on both sides, which not only symbolize the Olympics, the rounded shape is often associated in China with the traditional concept of "tong xin" - the unity of souls. On the front side of the medal there is a traditional auspicious ornament in the form of clouds. On the reverse side there is an emblem, and on the rings there are 24 points according to the number of the Winter Olympic Games.

What do you think of the Olympic motto?

Shi Tongtong, 4th year student:

On September 17, 2021, the Olympic motto "Together into the Future" was announced in Beijing. This motto speaks of the desire of China and the whole world for equality and friendship in the name of a brighter future.

In which winter sports do Chinese athletes have a chance of winning medals?

Peng Hao, 3rd year student:

First, it's freestyle. The Chinese athlete Gu Ailing has every chance of "gold" in the halfpipe and slopestyle. At the Beijing Olympics, they added a ski jumping tournament, she has every chance of winning.

Secondly, the short track has been a traditional favorite among Chinese athletes. There will be a relay race for mixed teams at this Olympics. In general, Chinese athletes have always shown themselves well in short track, I'm betting on Ren Ziwei!

We are also looking forward to the good success of the Chinese skaters. Here for us the biggest rivals are athletes from Russia, but I still cheer for ours!

When did the Chinese team first compete in the Winter Olympics?
