Russia - Dmitry Medvedev: Ukraine has become a toy in the hands of the US and NATO

Russia (bbabo.net), - Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev stated with regret that Ukraine has become, to a certain extent, a toy in the hands of NATO and, above all, in the hands of the United States, being used as an instrument of geopolitical pressure on Russia. In an interview with a number of domestic media, Medvedev outlined his vision of the causes and possible consequences of the developing conflict of interests between Russia and the West.

The roots of the problem go back to the time when Moscow was given a verbal promise not to expand NATO to the east and the territory of the former Soviet Union. "They didn't do anything. And now they are already climbing right on our borders," Medvedev stressed. This is already a real threat to the national security of the country, and Russia has exhausted the limits of retreat. "There is nowhere to retreat, Moscow is behind us," the deputy head of the Security Council assessed the situation with one catchphrase.

In this situation, our country came up with proposals for security guarantees. They are not rigid, Dmitry Medvedev assured, but very specific, very specific and fix Russia's concerns. If Ukraine joins NATO, then new military bases and new types of strike weapons may appear on the border. Then Russia finds itself in a very difficult geopolitical situation, which cannot be ignored.

"The point is not even, let's say, to guarantee against the non-advancement of NATO, although this is very important. But the point is that security guarantees, in my opinion, are of a different order," the deputy chairman of the Security Council emphasized. After all, without including Ukraine in the alliance, it is possible, on the basis of bilateral agreements, to supply strike types of weapons there or in another country neighboring Russia.

"These security guarantees are aimed at eliminating the obvious threats that have emerged at the moment," Dmitry Medvedev explained. If the Western partners meet halfway, then the agreements should be fixed in one way or another in some document that will be binding. The deputy head of the Security Council understands that a mandatory document is not an absolute guarantee, which has been many examples in history, but "it is still a serious legal basis."

Don't scare Russia with hellish sanctions, it won't work

Medvedev at the same time evaded answering whether Russia has a plan if the US refuses to provide guarantees. Such things are never disclosed, and such decisions are made by the president, but refusal will greatly complicate the overall situation. He did not begin to argue whether the appearance of Russian military bases and weapons in Cuba or Venezuela is possible, because these talks only provoke tension in the world.

Medvedev stressed that the scenario of a direct clash between Russia and NATO over Ukraine would be the most dramatic, simply catastrophic, and he hopes that this will never happen. "No one is looking for war, and everything must be done to ensure that there is no war. And even more so in the area of clashes between Russia and, say, the North Atlantic Alliance," he said.

In the current situation, the only way to overcome contradictions is to agree on security guarantees by political and diplomatic means, Medvedev is sure. "This is the use in our relations of the principle of indivisible security, which is fixed in all fundamental European and international documents, when the security of one side cannot be achieved at the expense of the security of the other side," the deputy head of the Security Council emphasized.

Ukraine has become, as Dmitry Medvedev put it, to a certain extent a toy in the hands of NATO and the United States, and is used as an instrument of pressure on Russia. "Ukraine, sad as it sounds for Ukraine, is not needed by the Americans, and the Europeans do not really need it either," he said. Ukrainian politicians have also added fuel to the fire in recent years. Medvedev does not consider it expedient to have direct contacts with the current Kiev leadership. "It makes no sense to talk with such politicians who lie, do not implement decisions, who make decisions directed against part of their own population, who do not comply with any international obligations in this sense," he explained his position.

Speaking about the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky, Medvedev said that he did not disappoint him in anything. Zelensky is doing exactly what "a person with the level of his training, with the level of his professional suitability for the post of President of Ukraine" should have done. "And, unfortunately, for him, probably, in the final analysis, this leads to the destruction of Ukraine itself," the deputy chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation emphasized. But he believes that in the future pro-Ukrainian pragmatic politicians will come to power in Kiev and direct their country towards normal economic relations with Russia, towards the recognition of geopolitical realities, including Crimea.Escalating the situation, Western politicians threaten Russia with new sanctions several times a day. The country is not afraid of them, Medvedev said. "This is not a figure of speech or bravado, but simply a statement of what actually happened," he said. Yes, there are some problems, but they are solvable. "And we certainly shouldn't be frightened by these problems, once again by these hellish sanctions. It won't work," Medvedev said.

So, in his opinion, there will be no fatal catastrophe even if Russia is disconnected from the international interbank information transfer system SWIFT. He doesn’t even really believe in it: “It is not beneficial to anyone, including this society itself, which is organized for SWIFT, especially since we have a huge number of transactions going through. This is an undermining of confidence in SWIFT.”

If the West nevertheless takes such a step, then Russia has already developed its own financial data transmission system, which, Dmitry Medvedev assured, will not give a single minute of downtime and will perform all the necessary functions within the country.
