Apple reveals results of $29.9 million lawsuit to search employee belongings in stores

Apple unveiled a website where the company will post details of nearly $30 million in compensation to its workers. The payment will be made as part of the settlement of a lawsuit filed by employees due to the inspection of things before leaving work.

The site contains documentation that is available to Apple employees in the state of California subjected to item inspections between July 25, 2009 and August 10, 2015.

Employees of the company sued the employer in 2013. They demanded that Apple pay them for the time spent checking the security of their devices and bags. In 2015, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California dismissed the case, citing that employees could not bring their belongings to work or be searched.

In 2020, the California Supreme Court ruled that the company violated state law by not paying retail workers for the time they spent searching personal items. The duration of the check varies from 5 to 20 minutes.

Approximately 14 thousand current and former employees of the Apple Store can count on compensation in the amount of about $ 1.2 thousand. In November last year, Bloomberg reported this.

At the end of last year, 50 employees of Apple stores left due to the company's policy regarding the threat of infection with coronavirus. They accused the employer of failing to keep the state safe from covid and aggressive customers. Employees reported that Apple refuses to pay extra for work in hazardous conditions and urged buyers to refuse to purchase the company's products.

In mid-December, Apple became the subject of an investigation by the US Department of Labor because of employee complaints about unsafe working conditions, discrimination and sexual harassment in the workplace.
