Enthusiast Efforts Helped Archive Nintendo DS Game for Training McDonald's Employees

Enthusiasts from Forest of Illusion have published the game eSMART 2.0, which was released for the handheld console Nintendo DS and was designed to train new McDonald's employees. A digital copy of the game is available for download on the Forest of Illusion website.

eSMART 2.0 was part of a series of mini-games and educational videos designed to train new employees at McDonald's Japan fast food restaurant chain. Employees could get acquainted with the kitchen in which they were to work and learn about the intricacies of internal production. The game was distributed on cartridges and was not mass-produced.

For a long time, Forest of Illusion specialists could not purchase the original eSMART 2.0 cartridge. The game was often put up for auction, but it was usually bought by collectors who were unwilling to share the game with the public and provide a cartridge for copying.

Through donations, Forest of Illusion was able to purchase an eSMART 2.0 cartridge for $2,600. Specialists created a backup copy of the game and published the archive on their website.

eSMART 2.0 itself is a series of stylized videos to help future McDonald's employees understand the inner workings of a fast food restaurant. After the videos, it is proposed to pass thematic tests that assess the level of learned material. The game is available in Japanese.
