The age of the stone under the monument to Peter I was analyzed

For the first time, Russian mineralogists determined the approximate age and mineral composition of the famous Thunder-stone, which is the pedestal for the Bronze Horseman sculpture. RIA Novosti writes about this.

According to experts from St. Petersburg State University and the Mining University, the age of the rock is about 1.5-1.6 billion years. According to the composition, Thunder-stone is a granite of biotite-muscovite potassium-feldspar composition.

The study was conducted under the guidance of Honorary Professor Andrey Bulakh. More than 20 mineral samples were taken, they were taken without harm to the monument. They were taken from the natural chips of the pedestal surface.

Samples were taken from 2003 to 2018.

The pedestal of the monument to Peter I is made of a huge granite monolith found in the vicinity of the village of Lakhta near St. Petersburg. It had a crack, according to the legend of local residents, which arose after a lightning strike, which is why it was called the Thunder-stone. Experts did not comment on the impact of lightning.

Earlier it was reported that a monument to Minin and Pozharsky was dismantled in Moscow.
