Yandex.Weather found out where the most frosty Epiphany

Yandex.Weather specialists conducted a study for the Epiphany holiday, which will take place on January 19. A distinctive feature of this date is the onset of severe frosts. Analysts have estimated the average air temperature on January 19 in Russian cities over the past decade.

The coldest frosts on Epiphany were observed in the cities of the Siberian Federal District: Omsk, Novosibirsk and Krasnoyarsk. The temperature range there is from -16.9° to -16.4°.

The cities of the Ural Federal District follow: Chelyabinsk and Yekaterinburg - from -13° to -12.5°. Then the cities of the Volga Federal District: Perm, Ufa, Nizhny Novgorod, Samara and Kazan. In these settlements, the temperature varies from -12.4° to -8.6°.

In Moscow, on Epiphany, the air temperature reaches only -7.8 °, in St. Petersburg - -5.8 °, in Voronezh - -5.7 °. In southern Volgograd and Rostov-on-Don, the average temperature over the past 10 years has averaged −4.8° and −2.4°.

In the list presented by Yandex.Weather, the top line is occupied by eastern cities, where severe frosts occur, and southern cities end the list. Alexander Ganshin, head of the company's weather forecasting group, attributes the increase in temperature in Russia from east to west to the influence of the Atlantic Ocean. Warmth-bringing cyclones affect Epiphany frosts in different regions: Ural weather is not as severe as Siberian weather, and Volga weather is warmer than Ural weather.

The lowest temperature in a million-plus city over the past ten years was recorded in Omsk - -30.9 °, for the entire observation period - -35.5 °.

Among all the settlements of the Russian Federation, the lowest temperature over the past decade was recorded in the village of Tutonchany in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, where frosts on January 19, 2018 reached -57.3 °.

The experts conducted a study using Meteum's proprietary technology. In 2022, on January 19, Krasnoyarsk will become the coldest million-plus city — -17°C, and St. Petersburg the warmest — +2°C. The minimum temperature in Russia is expected in the village of Oymyakon, Yakutia - -51 °.
