Instagram pessimizes the visibility of potentially harmful content

Instagram is taking new steps towards hiding "potentially harmful" content in the recommendation feed. Now updated ranking algorithms will reduce the priority of content that may contain hate speech, bullying and incitement to violence.

The ranking system is built on the history of user interactions with posts. When a user sends complaints about publications, the system remembers which posts the user considers undesirable for himself. The next time, when generating a recommendation feed, the algorithms will take into account the history of complaints and publications similar to the posts from the list will be moved to the very bottom of the feed.

In addition, the blog of the social network said that they improved the system for detecting posts that violate the rules of the community. Algorithms now better recognize content that incites hatred or encourages violence.

Instagram also emphasized that only records are ranked and deleted, users who posted them are not blocked. If a user's post violates the community rules, it will be deleted, and the user will be notified and will have the opportunity to challenge the decision.
