Durov: the ban on cryptocurrencies in Russia will destroy high-tech industries

Telegram founder Pavel Durov commented on the proposals of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation, which involve a ban on cryptocurrencies and mining in the country. In his opinion, this will lead to an outflow of IT specialists from Russia and destroy a number of sectors of the high-tech economy.

“No developed country bans cryptocurrencies. Reason: such a ban will inevitably slow down the development of blockchain technologies in general. These technologies increase the efficiency and safety of many types of human activity, from finance to art,” said Durov.

According to him, solutions based on distributed registries that use cryptocurrencies in calculations are replacing “the obsolete centralized financial systems of the second half of the 20th century.”

Durov emphasizes that neighboring countries, from Ukraine to Uzbekistan, following the developed ones, adopt progressive laws in the field of blockchain, as they do not want to be left on the sidelines of technological and economic progress.

“Russia today is one of the leaders in terms of the number of highly qualified specialists in the blockchain industry. Thoughtful regulation will allow the country to balance the distribution of forces in the international financial system and become one of the major players in the new economy,” the entrepreneur is sure.

According to Durov, the desire to regulate cryptocurrencies is natural on the part of any financial body, but the Central Bank of the Russian Federation, with its recommendations, “offers to throw out the baby with water.”

“Such a ban is unlikely to stop unscrupulous players, but it will put an end to legal Russian projects in this area,” Durov summed up.

This week, the Central Bank of the Russian Federation published measures to regulate digital currencies. He proposes to introduce liability for violating the ban on the use of cryptocurrency as a means of payment for goods, works and services for legal entities and individuals - residents of the Russian Federation; prohibit the organization of the issuance and release, circulation and exchange of cryptocurrency, as well as establish liability for violation; prohibit financial institutions from having their own investments in cryptocurrencies and related financial instruments, etc.

Industry experts have already called the Central Bank's measures "unprofessional and unrealizable." They believe that it is necessary to regulate the crypto industry, and not impose bans.
