A user complained that Google Drive puts a copyright warning on a text file with the number 1

On January 24, 2022, University of Michigan researcher and developer Emily Dolson revealed that Google Drive issued a copyright warning to her in a text file that contained one line and one number 1.

In one of her researches, Dolson made a Python program to write character 1 to a text file. She created this file on Linux, then worked with it on a couple of other operating systems, and then uploaded the file to Google Drive, sharing it with her students. As a result, the cloud service closed access to it to other users due to copyright infringement.

Mathematician Chris Jefferson confirmed that he had already encountered such a problem. It created files with numbers in the range -1000 to 1000 and received similar warnings for files containing the numbers 173, 174, 186, 266, 285, 302, 336, 451, 500, and 833. Google also placed restrictions on the use of these files. As a result, the experimenter decided not to upload many of his files with numbers to the cloud, as he began to fear that the automatic Google system could ban his account for gross violation of copyright.

A Google spokesperson wrote in response to Dolson's complaint that the Google Drive team is aware of the issue and is working on a fix. He did not specify when the cloud service would stop blocking text files with numbers.

In December 2021, Google Drive announced that it would restrict access to user files that violate company policy. If scanning after uploading to the cloud confirms the presence of prohibited, illegal or malicious content in the file, then the user will not be able to share the file with others, the file itself will no longer be publicly available, even for users who have a link to it. Google checks all users' text, image and video files uploaded to Google Drive with automatic analyzers.
