In China, copper collectors damage charging stations Tesla Supercharger

According to Gizmochina, in mainland China, copper collectors are massively damaging Tesla Supercharger charging stations. At night, they use a special tool to bite off a thick charging cable from each station rack and steal it. Thieves do not touch or break the rest of the electronics. The theft itself takes little time and thieves can quickly retreat before the arrival of the police.

Basically in China, Tesla Supercharger charging stations are not guarded and are located in an open and unfenced area. Observant and fast collectors of copper take advantage of this.

This is what the Tesla Supercharger charging station looks like with the cable cut off.

Each cut piece of cable contains about one and a half kilograms of copper. For him, thieves at the reception point receive about 100 yuan (1,300 rubles). But repairing the station for Tesla is more wasteful - a new cable with repair of the charging stand can cost more than 100,000 yuan (1.3 million rubles).

In addition, damage to Supercharger charging stations is a problem for Tesla electric car owners in China. They have to look for other workstations. Tesla is not quick to return damaged Superchargers to service. Charging stations after an act of vandalism for several days waiting for repairs.

In early 2021, Tesla commissioned an electric vehicle charging station factory in China. It produces 10,000 units per year of Supercharger V3 (peak power 250 kW) and Supercharger V2 (peak power 145 kW) chargers.

Tesla has installed more than 1,000 Supercharger charging stations in mainland China since 2018 and continues to expand its network.
