Samsung Display hopes for quantum dots

Samsung Display predicts that mass production of quantum dot (QD) displays will partly offset the losses of its large display business unit.

The manufacturer released the unit's figures at a recent press conference. In the fourth quarter of 2021, the unit posted sales of 9.06 trillion won and operating income of 1.32 trillion won. For the year as a whole, sales were 31.71 trillion won and operating income was 4.46 trillion won.

Fourth-quarter sales were up 2.2%, but operating income was down 11.4% quarter-on-quarter. The decline in operating profit is attributable to the large display business unit. The company clarifies that the figures were affected by falling prices for LCD displays and initial costs for the production of QD displays.

Regarding the issue of ending LCD panel production, Samsung Display has confirmed that it will stop LCD production as scheduled. In March 2020, the company announced its plan to stop manufacturing LCD panels as LCD panel prices continue to fall. Since then, it has changed its business structure towards manufacturing QD displays.

Samsung Display forecasts that the small and medium display business unit will continue to grow.
