BlackBerry sold its patents for $600 million

BlackBerry announced that the company has sold its patents for $600 million. However, BlackBerry says the deal will not affect its existing products and services.

The agreement concerns the sale of obsolete patents, mainly related to mobile devices, messaging and wireless networks. The buyer was Catapult IP Innovations Inc.

BlackBerry added that it has not sold patents that are critical to its core business. BlackBerry will continue to license the patents it sells, and this will not affect customers' use of its products or services.

The company said the deal is subject to compliance with all regulatory conditions under the U.S. Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvement Act and Canada's Investment Act, which could take up to 210 days.

According to the Android Authority, members of the CrackBerry forum have discovered that some BlackBerry apps for Android will soon stop working. This means that users of BlackBerry Android phones will face difficulties. Password Keeper, DTEK, BlackBerry Launcher, Privacy Shade, and Keyboard apps will end service on August 31, 2022.

In addition, the new BlackBerry 5G keyboard phone is still in development and will be released this year.
