Apple's Podcasts app accused of misrepresenting ratings

Users have accused Apple of incorrectly displaying the rating of their Podcasts app. Since November 2021, the app has started to receive a large number of positive ratings and has raised the average rating from 1.8 to 4.8 points. There were no major updates or bug fixes.

The situation was highlighted in mid-November by Twitter user Kosta Eleftheriou, who calls himself a "professional critic of the App Store." The user noticed that reviews for the Podcasts app began to appear ratings of the episodes themselves, and not the applications for playing them. The listeners talked about how they liked the material, what impressions they had and gave high marks, which had nothing to do with the functionality of the software.

Against this background, the average rating of the application began to grow and rose from 1.8 to 4.8 points. At the same time, Apple did not release major updates or fix known bugs. Costa suggested that the company intends to display a window asking you to rate the application after listening to the next episode. This approach misleads inattentive users and they rate applications, thinking they are reviewing a podcast.

The opinions of users on the Web are divided on this matter. Some believe that this is normal - often users do not evaluate the application itself, but its content. Others point out that the increase in the number of such “incorrect” reviews has occurred precisely in the past few months, which raises suspicions and suggests that Apple intends to manipulate the attention of users. In addition, such a "cheat" misinforms users who install the application on their device.
