Apple acknowledges iOS 15 bug that caused Siri to record conversations without their consent

The ZDNext portal published a report that talks about a bug in iOS 15, with which the Siri voice assistant recorded and transferred users' Siri conversations to Apple employees without their consent. Portal specialists addressed this problem to Apple. The company acknowledged the bug and also indicated that it was fixed in iOS 15.2. At the same time, Apple did notifications to users about the presence of an error and the need to update in order to avoid possible problems.

The problem is with the Improve Siri & Dictation feature. As Apple states on its website, if enabled, audio recordings of user interactions with Siri may be stored on Apple's servers. Employees of the company are analyzing to improve the functions of Siri, Dictation and other options related to the processing of voice requests in Apple products and services. Enabling this option requires consent from the iPhone user.

But, as it turned out, in iOS 15, even in the absence of consent, Siri recorded conversations and transferred them to Apple servers. As the company assures, this problem affected only a small group of users, without specifying the number or proportion of devices affected by the bug. In response to a request from ZDNext, Apple assured that now all conversation records received "unintentionally" are deleted from the servers.

In 2019, there was a similar Siri scandal. As users found out, Apple secretly listened to recordings of users' communication with the voice assistant, saying that it was doing this in order to improve the quality of the service. The company issued a public apology and has since required permission from users to transfer recordings. As Apple assures, consent to the transfer of recordings can be revoked at any time.
