IEA Says Record Growth In Renewables In 2021

The International Energy Agency reports that a world record for the production of renewable sources will be set in 2021. This exceeds the achievements of the last year. By the end of this year, 290 GW of additional capacity for the production of green energy will be commissioned.

The Agency predicts that by 2026 the global capacity of renewable energy sources will grow by 60% compared to 2020 and will amount to 4,800 GW , which is equivalent to the total power from fossil fuels and nuclear power combined. Green energy will account for 95% of the increase in global capacity over the next five years, of which half will come from solar systems.

The IEA notes that from 2021 to 2026 renewable capacity will increase by 50% compared to 2015-2020. This is facilitated by government support and agreements on climate change.

The rise in the cost of fossil fuels makes renewable energy sources more competitive, says IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol.

At present, China remains the leader in adding capacity, in 2026 the country will reach 1200 GW of energy produced by wind solar power plants. The United States, Europe, China and India account for 80% of the growth in renewables.

India plans to achieve 500 GW of green energy by 2030. Birope predicts that China could face a peak in carbon dioxide emissions well before 2030.

Solar power provides the main growth in renewable sources. In 2021, the figure will grow by 17%, amounting to almost 160 GW. The IEA expects the capacity of offshore wind turbines to triple by 2026.

The agency says governments can increase the number and accelerate the rate of introduction of renewable energy sources. However, the high cost of financing these projects remains an obstacle.

Despite the existing capacity growth, they will not be enough to ensure zero emissions by 2050, IEA are sure. To achieve these goals, it is necessary to quadruple the demand for biofuels and triple the demand for renewable sources. Currently, the leaders in the production of ethanol are the USA, Brazil and India.
