IT specialist told how to protect lost gadgets from scammers

Criminals can monetize data from stolen smartphones by getting hold of bank card information or use the content to blackmail and deceive your loved ones. Ekaterina Rudaya, an expert at the Laboratory for Practical Security Analysis of the Information Security Center of the Jet Infosystems Company, shared her secrets in an interview with the Prime agency.

According to her, first of all, for protection, it is necessary to secure the phone with a password and a fingerprint. At the same time, in crowded places, it is recommended to use only a fingerprint so that an attacker cannot spy on the password. Ekaterina added that face unlock is currently easier to bypass than fingerprint.

“It makes sense to set a PIN for the SIM card. This measure protects against fraudulent activities with your SIM card when using it on other devices. For some services, an attacker only needs to own a phone number to gain access to an account. For example, messengers need only confirm the phone number,” Rudaya said.

If your phone is gone, you need to log out of all social network accounts, mailboxes and instant messengers and promptly change passwords. For such cases, a special function "sign out from all devices" is provided. If you pay for purchases by phone, then its loss should be considered as the loss of a bank card, so you need to contact the bank and block the cards.

To comfortably transfer data to a new device, you need to set up data backup, for example, on Google disk. Then all your media files, contacts and other data will be saved on the disk, however, in this case, take care of protecting your account by setting a complex unique password.

In addition, you must activate the "find my device" function. This will help your phone if it is lost or stolen, and also makes it possible to remotely erase all data or specify a contact number for communication.

She noted that there are unpleasant options for stealing a phone, from which it is impossible to insure in any way. The gadget or its parts can be sold on the black market, it is possible to protect yourself from this, perhaps by choosing a smartphone that is not of interest to the attacker.
