Roskosmos showed the stones rolled down on Mars in the Labyrinth of the Night

The press service of Roscosmos has published an interesting photograph of the surface of Mars, taken by the CaSSIS camera aboard the Trace Gas Orbiter orbiter of the Russian-European ExoMars mission.

As the press service notes, in this photo, upon closer examination, you can see something more than a cursory glance. At the cliff cutting through the frame, signs of the movement of geological materials are visible. When zoomed in, several boulders are visible that fell off the cliff, leaving small depressions in the soft rock as they fell down the slope.

The photo shows a section of a labyrinth-like system with the telling name "Labyrinth of the Night". The entire network of plateaus and depressions that make up the "Labyrinth of the Night" extends for about 1200 km, and individual rocks reach a height of 5 km above the lowest point of the surrounding terrain.

In other places of this image, in particular, on the right, patches of linear ripples are visible, formed under the influence of the wind. The image is also complemented by several small impact craters. It was taken over the easternmost part of the "Labyrinth of Night" in the Phoenix Lake quadrangle, near the intersection with Io Canyon in the Mariner Valleys - the "grand canyon" of Mars.
