AMD's Xilinx Deal Completed, First Joint Chip Coming in 2023

On February 14, AMD announced the completion of its acquisition of FPGA manufacturer Xilinx. AMD CEO Lisa Su revealed that the company had previously licensed Xilinx technology and integrated it into its processor roadmap with first expected products in 2023.

Presumably, the new processor will be equipped with AMD x86 cores and programmable Xilinx gates.

Current Xilinx CEO Victor Peng will become president of AMD's new Adaptive and Embedded Computing Group (AECG), which combines Xilinx's classic business with AMD's embedded business. Peng will report to Lisa Su.

The combined company will offer different types of computing devices, including CPUs, GPUs and FPGAs. This move will help AMD continue to expand its presence in the data center sector and offer unique solutions that combine components developed by the two companies. AMD is strong in server CPUs and has a line of datacenter GPUs, while Xilinx offers intellectual property, products, and expertise in smartNICs, inference, and AI analytics. After the deal, AMD has new opportunities to compete with both NVIDIA and Intel.

Lisa Su herself confirms this: “Xilinx offers industry-leading FPGAs, adaptive SoCs, AI-based inference engines, and software expertise that enable AMD to offer the strongest portfolio of high-performance and adaptive computing solutions in the industry and capture a large market share. about $135 billion worth of opportunities that we see. in the cloud, at the edge, and on smart devices.”

AMD said last week that it had cleared the last regulatory hurdle to buy Xilinx. The deal was valued at $53 billion. In January, the Chinese regulator approved the deal, but put forward a number of conditions for AMD.
