Pediatrician Timakov spoke about the features of the immunity of children who recovered from COVID-19

Children have more resistant and flexible immunity to coronavirus infection, which allows the body to produce more antibodies. This was told by the pediatrician and infectious disease specialist Evgeny Timakov.

“Not all children develop immunity to coronavirus infection,” he said. “Not that many children are seropositive when we can see these antibodies. That is, the child, the more often an antibody response is formed, the younger the child, the less often antibodies are formed.

Earlier, German scientists from the Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf found that in children who had recovered from COVID-19, the production of antibodies continues up to nine months after the onset of the first symptoms, and the concentration of antibodies in the blood serum exceeds the level of antibodies in adults. The study was published on the medRxiv preprint service.

“This cohort of children, in a good way, needs to be examined in a year and check whether they have been ill with the coronavirus again,” Timakov added. - Then we will have more complete data on whether protection against re-infection with coronavirus remains in children without antibodies. If it persists, then antibodies in children do not play the most important role.

Children react to infections differently than adults, they have different mechanisms formation of an immune response, the expert explains - it can be longer, more specific, more persistent. At the same time, antibodies are more actively produced in older children.
