Microsoft fixes Teams bug that prevented calls to 911 on Android

Microsoft has released a fix for a Teams bug that prevented Android smartphone users from calling emergency services. The owners of the Google Pixel were the first to find the problem.

The bug was noticed by Reddit user KitchenPictures5849. He said that the smartphone froze when trying to call 911, and the call was in the background. The smartphone sent the user's location to the emergency service, but he could not tell the operator which apartment he was in and what the emergency was.

Google said the crash was caused by a conflict with the Microsoft Teams app. A company spokesperson said the error only occurs on Pixel devices running Android 10 or later, provided the Microsoft Teams app is installed but not signed in.

According to the former chief editor of XDA, Mishaal Rahman, the new version of Teams solves the problem. The bug, he discovered, was duplicating the PhoneAccount class in the operating system, a function that allows applications to make and receive phone calls. Many Android apps that have a call function instantiate PhoneAccount, but in this case Teams was creating too many of them when the app was installed but not signed in.

Rahman notes that the updated version does not create duplicate PhoneAccounts and also clears up any previously created instances on startup. Google is also planning to release an update to Android on January 4th, which will fix possible bugs on the system side.
