FDA approves first mobile insulin pump app

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the first mobile app for managing an insulin pump. Previously, the app only allowed you to view the status of your pump.

The t:connect app can now control Tandem Diabetes Care's t:slim X2 insulin pump. The regulator-approved version will allow you to set up automatic bolus insulin delivery scripts. Previously, it was forbidden to delegate this task to smartphones and the application only collected data on the glucose level and the state of the pump itself. Once a day, the user could see a graph of changes.

The company said that the introduction of bolus insulin is the most common scenario for interaction with the pump and in urban areas it is not always convenient for users to be distracted and complete the procedure on time. Automation of drug administration and the ability to control from a smartphone will solve this problem.

The feature is currently available to US users. The updated t:connect app is available in the app stores for iOS and Android devices. And the pump firmware update will come to users “over the air”. New gadgets will already be supplied with the latest firmware version.

In the fall of 2021, doctors approved an open-source insulin delivery system that allows patients to use DIY systems. And at the end of the summer of the same year, scientists from Italy presented a robotic implant for insulin delivery.
