Tesla lost 7 positions in the annual rating of Consumer Reports

Tesla has dropped to number 23 (out of 32) in Consumer Reports' annual car brand rankings, down seven positions from last year. In addition, the Model 3 has lost its leading position in the ranking of electric cars. This is the worst result in the last seven years. As the magazine explains, this is due to the difficult-to-use steering wheel that the automaker implemented in its Model S and Model X. This worsened the performance of the models during road tests.

The reason for the downgrade was also confirmed by Jake Fisher, senior director of vehicle testing, in an interview with Bloomberg. According to him, Tesla changed the design of the steering wheel from a wheel to a steering wheel, which made it much more difficult to control. The location of the turn signal and horn buttons on the steering wheel may cause accidental pressing. In addition, the absence of a traditional gear shift, as the magazine found, worsens the driving experience.

In an interview with CNBC, Fisher noted the shortcomings of the driver monitoring system. In particular, on the Model 3 during tests, the camera could simply be closed so that it did not signal that the driver was distracted. In this aspect, the model lost to Ford's Mustang Mach-E electric car, which took the top line in the electric car rating. As Fischer notes, Tesla is losing out to Mach-E in many ways, which currently has relatively fewer problems and a higher reliability rating. Mach-E's performance earned it the title of Best Electric Car of 2022.

As Bloomberg notes, Model S and Model X represent only a small part of Tesla's total production. In particular, in 2021 the company produced 24,980 Model S and X electric cars, compared to 911,242 Model 3 and Y. At the same time, Consumer Reports ratings are determined by averaging the scores of each car in the company's lineup. Earlier, the publication indicated that the Model 3 is the only electric car of the company that it can recommend for purchase.
