US puts AliExpress on the list of pirated marketplaces

According to the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg, the US Trade Representation (USTR) has listed AliExpress (owner of Alibaba) and WeChat (owner of Tencent) as a pirated marketplace.

According to a statement from the US regulatory agency, these two major online marketplaces in China facilitate the sale and distribution of counterfeit products around the world.

USTR explained that it has recorded a large number of fakes on AliExpress, as well as products that are advertised as genuine, but in fact are of low quality analogues.

Since 2011, USTR has maintained a register of platforms and marketplaces that sell pirated goods. The agency does not have the right to block the activities of companies in the United States, but after being included in this list, the number of American clients for services begins to decline significantly. The USTR publishes a list of pirated resources to raise public awareness and help affected companies protect their intellectual property rights.

Previously, the USTR list included the Chinese store Taobao and the cloud storage service Baidu, which are also directly involved in or facilitate the counterfeiting of products of various trademarks, as well as infringing copyrights.

The Chinese government has reacted to such US actions. China believes that the United States deliberately creates unfair and discriminatory conditions for these sites, but in fact they pay great attention to issues related to the protection of intellectual property rights.

According to the USTR, the global trade in counterfeit and pirated goods in Russia takes place at Gorbushka and the Dubrovka and Sadovod markets in Moscow.
