Mercedes-Benz expects to acquire production lines that produce only electric vehicles in the coming years

According to the source, Mercedes-Benz will for now refrain from building factories solely for the production of electric vehicles, which would take quite a long time. Instead, the manufacturer will form lines at existing enterprises that produce only electric vehicles. It is said that this will allow maintaining the flexibility necessary to follow changes in the market situation. All-electric car factories could appear at Mercedes-Benz in the second half of the decade, while some of its existing production lines will switch to all-electric vehicles in the coming years.

“Building a brand new battery electric vehicle factory takes time. We took a different approach,” said Joerg Burzer, production manager at Mercedes-Benz. “In the next few years, we’re bound to have EV-only lines…we’re also seeing entire factories moving to EVs – that’s the theme of the second half of the decade.”

The premium car maker will launch production of its EQE model, unveiled last September at the IAA Mobility Show, in Bremen later this year, followed by Beijing and Tuscaloosa.

Switching investments from combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles, Mercedes-Benz is betting on this model, an electric adaptation of the E-Class with a maximum range of 660 km.

Just 2.3% of Mercedes-Benz vehicle sales last year were battery electric vehicles. The share of plug-in hybrids, which have an internal combustion engine, electric motors and a battery with the ability to charge from the mains, was 11%. Electric and hybrid electric vehicles are expected to account for 50% of sales by 2025.
