Chinese company to build two colossal offshore wind turbines of over 16MW each

Chinese company MingYang Smart Energy is building two 16.6 MW wind turbines at the MingYang Yangjiang Qingzhou Four offshore wind farm in the South China Sea.

The two giant wind turbines will join 59 8 MW wind turbines in the wind farm with a total capacity of 505.2 MW. It is expected to be launched by 2026.

Information about the construction of one MySE 16.0-242 turbine with a height of 242 m, which will be able to provide electricity to 20,000 homes, appeared last year. This turbine will generate 80,000 MWh of electricity per year, producing 45% more power than MingYang's previous model, the MySE 11.0-203. The blade length of the windmill is 118 m, and the swept area is equivalent to six football fields. One such turbine is said to be able to prevent the emission of more than 1.6 million tons of carbon dioxide during its service life.

According to MingYang, the turbine can be fixed on the bottom or installed afloat. Increasing the size of turbines reduces unit costs, and the development of floating offshore wind farms greatly expands the choice of locations for their installation.
