Android 13 won't support DNS over HTTPS as planned

Google has abandoned plans to implement DNS over HTTPS support in Android 13. Previously, the company intended to extend the existing DNS over TLS feature, which encrypts DNS requests in a different way, and appeared in Android 9 Pie.

The difference between the two functions is small, but as Cloudflare notes, it primarily boils down to the port: DoH requests look like standard HTTPS traffic. This potentially improves client privacy, even though both standards protect requests with encryption. Many popular DNS resolvers, including Google and Cloudflare, support both standards. Windows 11 supports DoH, while the latest versions of macOS and iOS support both DoH and DoT.

DoH was expected to appear in Android 13, but XDA Developers found that Google had abandoned those plans. A commit in AOSP Gerrit indicates that this feature will not be enabled in Android 13 by default. Mishaal Rahman of Esper.io claims that this feature has been removed. However, since it was part of the DNSResolver bbabo.netEX module, Google may later enable this feature again.

Android 13 will continue to support DoT.

In February, Google introduced the first test version of Android 13. It was codenamed Tiramisu. The final release is expected in the third quarter of 2022.
