iPhone 15 series will feature Apple's own 5G modems

Apple uses its own Apple A SoCs for iPhones and iPads, and recently the company has also begun making its own ARM-based Apple Silicon SoCs for Mac devices. Now, the Cupertino-based tech giant is gearing up to launch its own 5G modems.

According to DigiTimes, Apple plans to replace Qualcomm's 5G modem chips in next year's iPhone 15 series with its own 5G modems. It is also reported that the company is already in talks with suppliers who will help in the production of chips.

A DigiTimes report claims that Apple has entered into talks with two key vendors, Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE) and Siliconware Precision Industries (SPIL). Aooke has been working for several years to create its own cellular chips that will replace chips from Qualcomm and Intel in the iPhone.

Aside from better integration and control over features, another big benefit of Apple ditching Qualcomm and Intel in favor of its own 5G modems is that the company won't have to pay royalties to the aforementioned companies.

Apple has performed well with its Apple A and Apple M single-chip systems. But we have yet to see how the company's 5G modems turn out.
