Honda is testing an erased lane detection system

Honda is testing a road monitoring system that assesses lane conditions using cameras and GPS navigation. The technology was developed by the company's research institute in the United States and launched on the roads of Ohio.

The system evaluates each section of the lane and assigns status markers to it - green, yellow, gray or red. Green and yellow correspond to the ideal or good state of the lane markings, red means that the lane markings need updating, and gray is assigned when there are no lane markings (for example, on city streets or rural roads), the company explains.

The system records road conditions using vehicle cameras and other sensors, coordinating this data with on-board GPS to pinpoint the exact location of damage, and then uploads that data to the cloud. Local road departments can access them through the website and find out where to apply the markings first.

“We regularly check our roads all over Ohio, but it's a laborious process. We're excited to be working with Honda to improve it, ”said Ohio Department of Transportation Chief Jack Marchbanks.

In addition to tracking worn lane markings, the Honda Research Institute plans to expand the system to other types of road damage. The company hopes this system will prove useful in keeping all roads safe.
