Internet scammers began to attack Russians through Africa

Fraudsters send Russians links to sites registered in the .cf domain zone, which is assigned to the Central African Republic (CAR), Infosecurity a Softline Company reported. The number of such resources, according to experts, has increased by 320% over the past six months.

“Websites in the CAR domain zone are not much different from those that cyberscammers create in the .ru domain zone — new malicious sites continue to threaten customers of the largest Russian banks, payment services, popular marketplaces and food delivery services,” said a leading analyst at the Detection Department digital threats Infosecurity a Softline Company Alexander Vurasko.

According to him, classic phishing schemes are mostly used, and nothing but the domain zone, unremarkable.

“It happens that the site itself is created in the .ru zone, and the payment page to which it redirects the user is already in the .cf zone. However, I would not say that this greatly increases the effectiveness of phishing. As a rule, people who fall for phishing pay little attention to such nuances. In addition, .cf is such a rare domain that it is quite difficult to immediately identify some kind of threat in it,” he said.

To avoid problems, Vurasko advised avoiding Russian-language sites in the .cf domain zone that offer services on behalf of brands popular in Russia. Read more about dangerous resources on CAR domains in the material.
