Psychologist Nikolaeva told how to protect a child from bullying due to events in Ukraine

If a child, against the backdrop of the events in Ukraine, is bullied at school for being Russian or Ukrainian, parents should try to resolve the conflict through a teacher, and explain to the child himself that his offenders are most likely just scared. Such recommendations in a conversation with were given by Anastasia Nikolaeva, a psychologist and researcher at the Moscow State Pedagogical University.

“If a child is bullied, it is always the responsibility of an adult to resolve this conflict. If parents notice this, they go to the tutor or teacher. Further, it is important to understand how this teacher (or educator) is an authority in the class. Ideally, he himself is able to resolve this conflict. If there are already problems in the class, then the teacher may not be an authority. Then the task of parents is to find any other authoritative adult, ”Nikolaeva advised.

It is also important to remember that bullying tends to come from disadvantaged families, for whom violence is the norm. And when dealing with such a child, it is important for an adult not to be offended by him. For such children, you can come up with some kind of activity that will allow them to feel significant without attacks on their peers, the psychologist advised.

It is worth explaining to a child experiencing bullying that the bullies themselves are stressed and scared, or maybe they have some problems in the family.

“If teenagers are able to conduct a dialogue themselves, it is necessary to distance themselves as much as possible from the conflict, the “Russian-Ukrainian” confrontation. The child can say that the authorities understand this, that Russian people are very different, there is no collective image behind nationality, it does not determine the quality of a person in any way. Before that, we were in the same class, we communicated - that is, to try to move this conflict from the plane of children's relations to the plane of politics, ”added the expert.

If parents and teachers have not been able to solve the problem, it may be worth considering changing schools, or involving other adults. The main thing to remember is that the problem will never be solved by itself at the level of children, Nikolaeva emphasized.
