VPN-service Lantern uses a decentralized tool for bypassing state blocks in the Russian Federation

The developers of the Lantern VPN service reacted to the threat of blocking it from the side of the regulator in the Russian Federation. They said they would do everything possible to counter this and would use a decentralized tool to bypass blocking for users in Russia.

The Lantern developers explained that they are ready to respond to the lock, applying the same adaptive methods on their part. They are not going to cooperate with the Russian regulator and fulfill any content filtering requirements.

The VPN team revealed that it has integrated a censorship-resistant decentralized content distribution tool into its desktop version of its client, and a similar solution will appear in its smartphone clients in December or January. He promised that even if access to YouTube or other services is blocked in the country, using Lantern, users will be able to "safely and securely" view the blocked content.

In early December, Roskomnadzor warned that it would impose restrictions on the use of six VPN services in Russia - Betternet, Lantern, X-VPN, Cloudflare WARP, Tachyon VPN and PrivateTunnel.

In September, Roskomnadzor blocked VPN services Hola! VPN, ExpressVPN, KeepSolid VPN Unlimited, Nord VPN, Speedify VPN, IPVanish VPN, and Red Shield VPN.

On June 17, 2021, Roskomnadzor imposed restrictions on the use of VPN services VyprVPN and Opera VPN. These measures "are a response to threats to circumvent restrictions on access to child pornography, suicidal, pro-drug and other prohibited content." RKN has included more than 200 technological processes from 130 Russian companies in the "white lists" for this blocking. On the same day, Opera suspended support for VPN services in its browsers on the territory of the Russian Federation for all users.

In fact, the supervisory authority imposes restrictions on access to many VPN services only according to "white lists" using complexes based on TSPU equipment (technical means of countering threats), which are installed and launched at the sites of most providers and telecom operators in the Russian Federation. This system analyzes all Internet traffic (packages) of users for a number of parameters and decides whether to pass it (by default), limit the speed (rules for Twitter and can Google, Facebook, YouTube) or block (for prohibited sites and services). Only ILV specialists configure and control the elements of the TSPU. Due to the secrecy of Roskomnadzor, it is not yet known exactly what kind of equipment is supplied to block VPN, but one can make assumptions, based on the range of RDP.RU products, that these are mainly EcoDPI-based systems.
