TikTok has suspended some services in Russia

On March 6, 2022, the TikTok social network announced the suspension of some services in Russia. TikTok is closing live broadcasts and will not upload new video content from Russian users. The social network messaging service will continue to operate as usual. Users can also watch videos available on the social network.

The reason for this decision on the part of the company is the recent amendments to Russian legislation and the need to comply with the new law on “fake news” (on March 4, the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation was supplemented with Article 207.3), the violation of which provides for forced labor or imprisonment for up to three years, as well as a fine of up to 1.5 million rubles. In the presence of aggravating circumstances and if the violation caused serious consequences, the punishment may increase to 15 years in prison.

TikTok clarified that the safety of employees and users remains a top priority for the social network. The TikTok team is studying the implications of this law in terms of platform security and has decided to take the necessary measures to protect the service's customers to help them avoid criminal penalties.

TikTok added that the social network is a platform for creativity and entertainment, which can become a source of distraction in the current situation, when many users are overwhelmed, misunderstood and isolated.
