Twitter connects Tor

The social network Twitter announced the launch of its web application on the Tor network; a new way to access the service is reported on the company's website. According to representatives of the company, this decision was made in order to make the service more accessible.

The Tor network uses "onion routing". The web version of Twitter is available at https://twitter3e4tixl4xyajtrzo62zg5vztmjuricljdp2c5kshju4avyoid.onion using the Tor browser or a similar tool. The company notes that users could use Twitter through Tor before, but the new version is designed specifically for the social network and adds more layers of protection and anonymity.

Twitter employee Alec Muffett said in his social network account that this is the most important and long-awaited tweet he has ever written. In a comment to Verge, he said that in this way the company will provide a "fair basis" in coordination with people using the Tor network.

The Engadget publication believes that the launch of the Tor version of Twitter may be called upon so that users from Russia, where the service was recently blocked, could access the social network. Journalists believe that thanks to this, the Russians will be able to find information about events in Ukraine, bypassing information from the state media. However, the launch of the Tor version will also help users from other countries where the social network is blocked, including from China and Iran, Engadget notes.

Currently, Tor is already running web versions of Facebook, the DuckDuckGo search engine, the Protonmail email service, and a number of major global media outlets, including the New York Times and the BBC.
