Roskomnadzor invited Instagram users to switch to VK and Odnoklassniki

On March 12, 2022, some users of the Gosuslugi portal began to receive email messages regarding the shutdown of Instagram since March 14. The letter on behalf of Roskomnadzor explained the reason for the blocking and gave advice on alternative sites.

“Since Russia is a country that has its own competitive Internet platforms, including the social networks VK and Odnoklassniki, with coverage of tens of millions of users, we hope that your transition to these Internet environments will happen quickly, and in the future you will discover new opportunities communications and business,

Roskomnadzor advised users. On March 11, Roskomnadzor gave Russian Instagram users two days until March 14 to transfer their photo and video materials to other social networks. Starting next Monday, the American service will be blocked in the country at the direction of the Prosecutor General's Office for allowing the publication of calls for violence against Russian citizens.

The media reported that the RKN measures against Meta (Facebook and Instagram) will not apply to the WhatsApp messenger, since this service is a communication tool, and not a platform for posting prohibited content.

To download their data from Instagram, the user needs to go to a special social network page where you can order an archive of your own publications and content. An archive request can take up to 48 hours to be processed. The link to the archive will be available 4 days after its generation.

The head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, confirmed that the social network will be blocked by Roskomnazor in Russia from March 14. Mosseri considers this decision erroneous. He said that blocking the social network would deprive 80 million Russian users of communication with each other and with the rest of the world. According to him, about 80% of users in Russia are subscribed to foreign accounts of other Instagram clients.

On March 5, Roskomnadzor restricted access to the Twitter website in Russia on the basis of Article 15.3 of the federal law "On Information, Information Technologies and Information Protection."

On March 4, 2022, Roskomnadzor announced the blocking of Facebook as a response to restricting access to Russian media. The regulator began blocking access to the Facebook network (owned by Meta Platforms, Inc.) in Russia.
