The Brazilian court ruled to block Telegram in the country, Durov apologized to the Brazilian court and promised to fix everything

On March 18, 2022, the Brazilian Supreme Court ruled to block the Telegram application in the country at the request of the prosecutor's office and the police due to the placement of fakes and prohibited content there, which the platform administration did not remove at the request of the court. After this decision, Durov, in his publication on the messenger, apologized to the Supreme Court of Brazil for the negligence in processing requests from the department and the poor work of his team. He promised to fix everything, asked for a delay and not to block the messenger.

Brazilian media explained that the court ruled to block Telegram after the messenger failed to respond several times to a court decision to block users who spread false information.

Currently, the court order is under execution, ordering Internet service providers in the country to take action to block the application in Brazil. In case of refusal, they face a fine of 100,000 reais (2 million rubles) per day.

Telegram founder Pavel Durov explained this unpleasant event by a misunderstanding between the team and the court. Unfortunately, our reply must have been lost because the Court used the old general purpose email address in further attempts to contact us. As a result, we missed his decision at the beginning of March, which contained an additional takedown request. Fortunately, we found and processed it, submitting another report to the Court today.

The last 3 weeks have been unprecedented for the world and for Telegram. Our content moderation team has been inundated with requests from various parties. However, I am confident that once a reliable communication channel is in place, we will be able to effectively handle requests to remove public channels, which are illegal in Brazil.

Durov said. Durov asked the court to consider postponing the ruling for a few days at its discretion to allow Telegram to rectify the situation by appointing a representative in Brazil and creating a basis for a quick response to future pressing issues like this.

Previously, Telegram had problems in Germany up to the threat of blocking.

On January 10, Germany demanded that Telegram appoint an official representative in the country to quickly remove banned content due to anti-COVID protests gaining momentum. The representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs then explained that the German authorities send all requests to the UAE, where the headquarters of Telegram is located, and most of the requests do not reach the only known Telegram mailbox in Dubai at all.

On February 1, the media reported that the German Ministry of Justice launched two investigations against Telegram for not removing prohibited content and refusing to impose restrictions on the distribution by users of publications with threats and calls for disobedience from COVID dissidents.

On February 4, Telegram made contact with the German authorities. The moderators of the messenger began to quickly comply with the requirements of the country's regulators and blocked 64 channels with prohibited content, including calls for murder and violence, as well as disobedience to the law due to the pandemic.
