Chrome OS 101 for Developers introduces variable refresh rate support

Developer version 101 of Chrome OS introduces support for variable refresh rate (VRR) technology. To access testing, you must enable the flag in chrome://flags#enable-variable-refresh-rate . As Google clarifies, the experimental VRR "only works on compatible displays."

VRR synchronizes the refresh rate of the display with the FPS of everything on the screen. This helps prevent screen tearing, judder, lag, and other similar effects.

A week ago, Google said it would launch Steam alpha testing on Chrome OS "soon" for select Chromebook models, but didn't give a specific timeline. The official list of devices with possible Steam support has also not yet been published. Google is likely planning to modify Chrome OS to make it more comfortable to play. This requires a VRR connection.

As The Verge points out, variable refresh rate support could also signal higher refresh rates for future Chrome OS tablets. According to the publication's specialists, at the moment the system works on tablets "quite clumsily." If Chrome OS devices want to compete with the likes of Samsung and Apple, VRR is vital.
